year 1 get to enjoy forest school once again!

Year 1 have been lucky enough this half term to have two extra sessions with the lovely Mrs Greggs.  With weather and seasons on our minds Owls set out to Forest School!
Week 1
After doing a weather check and making sure we were all wearing the appropriate kit, we played a game in which we had to think about the weather in each season and use actions to represent it.  We had to think hard to avoid being turned into an ice statue by Jack Frost!
Mr and Mrs Duck, who reside in the Forest School area in Spring, greeted us on our arrival to the site. We used our stealth walking which enabled us to get really close to observe them before they flew away to a quieter location!
We looked at different types of birds nests, that Mrs Greggs had brought in to show us, and talked about why birds and other creatures build nests and homes and why they tend to choose Spring in which to do so.
There was also time to build our own nests, practice balancing and of course make some delicious creations in the mud kitchen!
Week 2
It was a beautiful Spring day for Forest School this week. We talked about how the weather changes in the season of Spring and what it means for nature as well as what differences we had noticed.
We spotted lots of different flowers and learnt to identify three of them - dandelion, dead nettle and stitch-wort.
Last week we thought about what Spring means to birds and land animals and why they choose to have their young at this time of the year. This week we looked at the pond! Mrs Greggs pond-dipped and we saw newts and dragonfly larvae (nymphs). We learnt how newts (frogs and toads) come back to ponds in Spring to lay their eggs and that a dragonfly nymph stays in the pond for 1-3 years before it climbs out of the water and turns into a dragonfly.
